IVP Publish Astonishing Book

RokStories Feature

On the 150th Anniversary of Darwin's Origin IVP have published a book challenging the scientific accuracy and theological credibility of theistic evolution. The book is unique because of the diversity of its contributing authors who represent a very broad spectrum of denominational backgrounds. It is unique too for the level of scientific and theological scholarship that it combines and the fact that these contributors do not come from one special interest group or association. Though they may disagree on many things they are clearly united by two specific convictions. They all have a high view of science and they are all diametrically opposed to theistic evolution.

The book is edited by one of the UK's leading geneticists, Professor Norman Nevin OBE, who has over 300 peer-reviewed articles to his name. The book was written in response to the tidal wave of theistic evolutionary propaganda that has threatened to swamp the christian community during the past 18 months. A very deliberate campaign has been waged to persuade people that Darwinian evolution is compatible with Christian faith. This volume seeks to expose the error of that position and this website offers anyone interested the opportunity to ask further questions and to join the debate.

Regarding #1, I welcome the book as a scholarly contribution to these issues. I have reviewed it for a Christian monthly, and will post it when published. Its merit is that the various authors engage seriously with relevant challenges (scientific and theological)to the message they are advocating.

Regarding #2, the book does interact with Denis Alexander's book - but this has been touted as the best contemporary defence of theistic evolution. It is good practice to read and respond to the best arguments of those who differ from you. It is sad that Theistic evolutionists do not do this, but rely on the few books from biblical creationist authors they read 20-30 years ago. Yes, perhaps it would have been good to nteract with Henri Blocher - but he brought no serious challenge to the biblical creation position (even though he did not share it).

I think a disappointing aspect of this book is its decision to interact (almost) exclusively with a single author and a single book written from a pro-evolution perspective - especially with respect to the explicitly theological questions the book raises. DA's book represents one scientist's attempt to integrate his convictions within his area of expertise with his evangelical beliefs - and is therefore necessarily broad in scope and covering topics beyond his strictly academic specialty. In chosing to focus on responding to this one book the importance of SCEE?'s contribution to the debate seems limited. For example, given SCEE?'s particular (and valid) concern for the doctrine of the fall, it seems remarkable that the book fails to interact with Henri Blocher's profound reflection on the fall and the origin of evil, again from a sincerely evangelical perspectively but similarly concerned to take into account (though not uncritically) the current scientific consensus.

It is an astonishing book, totally worthless in every way. Bad science and bad theology in equal measure.
